In recent decades, a complex crisis has transformed Venezuela from historically a host country into one of the world’s largest producers of migrants, together with Syria and Ukraine. Many Venezuelan architects have migrated to Europe, bringing knowledge that has transformed, adapted, and grown in their new professional milieus. However, the manifestation of imported ideas is not always evident amid the manifold cultural differences between both realities. This article examines cultural interference and migrating positions through the work of five Venezuelan-European architects, contrasting migrant practitioners’ design methods, architectural references, professional attitudes, and self-constructions vis-à-vis the countries where they respectively currently work. In doing so, we explore the susceptibility and openness of European architecture to influences beyond its geographical borders.
